A Note on Sun Yat sen - from Colour Your Life, written in 1992

In China all people with the same surname are said to be related. If this is true then my ancestors ruled the largest and most powerful of the Three Kingdoms in China (222-280 AD). Its capital was situated in Nanking which is also where my family's ancestral temple is located. It is here, where my great-great grand uncle's mausoleum is situated. Sun Yat-Sen (1866-1925) was born in Kwantung province and received his medical training in Hong Kong. When he graduated in 1892 he changed his first name from Tai-cheong to Yat-Sen which means 'unconventional or free spirit'. His outlook was modern which reflected his answer to China's plight - to establish a democratic republic.

Dr Sun Yat-Sen was responsible for instigating the downfall of the last dynasty in China - the Ching Dynasty - after 11 unsuccessful attempts to overthrow them. During his attempts to make China a democratic republic, his life was constantly under threat.

Now known as the 'father of modern China', he became the first President of the Republic of China in 1911.

At the first pergola of his impressive mausoleum the words 'Universal Love' are inscribed. These words reflect his ideological beliefs. I feel he was a very special individual, one who saw and responded deeply to the plight of his people. I feel very humble and proud to be related to him. Sun Yat-Sen dedicated his life to help bring about the restoration and the dignity of the Chinese people.

In my own way as a teacher and therapist, working to educate, uplift and heal the human spirit, I hope to carry on in the same tradition. In my heart, I truly believe we are kindred spirits and his presence and memory is close to me and lives on as a beacon to China's future.
